Belgium Crush New Zealand 5–1 to Storm Into Round of 32; De Bruyne and Trossard Shine in Dominant Group G Finish

Belgium secured a dominant 5–1 win over New Zealand in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G clash at BC Place Stadium. Leandro Trossard scored twice while Kevin De Bruyne starred with key assists and a goal. Belgium topped the group on goal difference, advancing to the Round of 32 alongside Egypt.

In a commanding display at BC Place Stadium, Belgium delivered a ruthless 5–1 victory over New Zealand in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G encounter, securing qualification to the Round of 32 with authority. The emphatic win not only underlined Belgium’s attacking depth but also confirmed their position at the top of the group standings.

Belgium dominated possession from the opening whistle, repeatedly pressing New Zealand into their own half. Early pressure saw Leandro Trossard come close in the 11th minute, striking the post with a powerful attempt. Belgium were later awarded a penalty, but the decision was overturned after a Video Assistant Referee review, with officials ruling that the New Zealand defender’s hand was in a natural position.

The breakthrough arrived in the 28th minute when Kevin De Bruyne delivered a precise cross into the box, which Trossard converted clinically to give Belgium a 1–0 lead. The forward struck again shortly after the restart, doubling the advantage in the 49th minute after finishing another well-placed assist from De Bruyne.

New Zealand attempted to respond, but goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced key saves to maintain Belgium’s control of the match. In the 66th minute, De Bruyne extended the lead to 3–0, becoming the oldest Belgian player to score at a FIFA World Cup at the age of 34.
